Fly-In Pancake breakfast a success!

A bright blue sky, soft breezes and the welcome aroma of blueberry pancakes and sausages met the willing eyes and appetites of over 150 people participating in the annual Fall Fly-In Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Arrowhead Eagles Aviation Organization Saturday.

With this stage set the Eagles found willing visitors anxious to eat, mingle and talk with each other and to get a close-up look at the airplanes parked nearby. Plane rides were also offered and many people took advantage of this option to enjoy our region increasingly showing signs of another beautiful fall season.

A major attraction was the presence of a 1941 Piper J-3 Cub owned by Kathryn Finn. Her father, Clarence J. Krotz, bought the Cub in 1950 with floats, taught his three daughters to fly, and used the Cub extensively to build the original Skyport Lodge and airport. It is the only registered flyable Cub in Cook County.

“Because of COVID- 19, we couldn’t hold the breakfast Fly-In last year,” said Mike Raymond, President of the Eagles Organization. “The event is our major program each year to raise both public awareness of aviation and to raise funds to assist us in our scholarship program. It’s a real pleasure to greet so many people interested in aviation and to hear their stories, whether as former pilots or flight trainees, or how aviation in some way influenced their lives, even those who had a hand in helping develop our modern airport. And we sincerely thank everyone who participated.”

Overall, the event Saturday raised approximately $1,900 before expenses. The Fly-In event was coordinated by Rodney Roy, Eagles Vice President, with the help of 17 volunteers, including board members of the Cook County Historical Society. With grand weather prevailing that morning, about 12 aircraft came in from distant locations. Fly-In breakfasts are common events in aviation circles and are a good way to see other airports and experience good old-fashioned community hospitality. The event will again be conducted next September, weather permitting.
