Flu shots, classes and fun at Senior Center

BRIGHTER SIDE OF AGING

While writing this during Monday’s windstorm, I have been humbled to realize that I am dependent upon technology. The power went out and I never seriously considered using pen and paper to complete the column. I like the ease of the computer and email.

Flu shots will be given at the Senior Center on Tuesday, October 6, and Wednesday, October 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each day. The cost is $25 and is covered by Medicare, however if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must go to Sawtooth Mountain Clinic to receive your flu shot.

Thisflushot does not protect against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. There will be separate clinics for shots to protect against the H1N1 virus at a later date. Medicare will cover both the regular flu shot and the H1N1 shot. Please call Sawtooth Mountain Clinic at 387-2330 for more information on flu shots and other places you may receive a flu shot.

We have a great trip planned to see the musical, Sugar,
at UMD. We will attend a Sunday matinee on October 25. Sugar
is based on the 1950’s movie Some Like it Hot,
which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe as Sugar. We will be leaving the Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $40 for ticket and transportation. Payment is due on October 12. As for all Senior Center trips, this trip is geared for adults age 50 plus, but anyone may attend. Call the Senior Center at 387-2660 to register or for more information.

On Monday, October 19, Marjori Bottila of the Area Agency on Aging will present Medicare 2010
at 10:30 a.m. at the Senior Center. Bottila will talk about Medicare changes for 2010. The program is free and no registration is required.

Bottila will be returning to the Senior Center on November 18 and December 5 to meet with individual Medicare recipients about registering for, or changing, their Medicare supplemental insurance carrier or drug coverage.

There will be an AARP
Driver Safety Beginning
Class
at the Senior Center on Wednesday, October 7, and Thursday, October 8,from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. each evening. Call the Senior Center at 387- 2660 to register. Drivers aged 55 plus who take this course receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance. Thecost is $17 for AARP members and $19 for non-members. Another Beginning
class will be at the Grand Portage Community Center on Monday, October 19, and Thursday, October 22, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. each evening. Call 475-2655 to register.

Safe drivers maintain their 10% discount by taking a refresher class every three years. The last three AARP
