Floyd Delano Johnson, 80, died peacefully at his home on June 28, 2014 with family at his side. He was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in May.
Floyd was born December 29, 1933 to Emil and Edith Johnson of Schroeder. He resided 100 yards from where he grew up. Floyd attended school in the Tofte schoolhouse and later in Grand Marais.
He joined the Navy and served on the U.S.S. Stockham from 1951 to 1954. He attended several Stockham reunions over the years.
He worked his whole life as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #49 out of Duluth. He worked for Cook County Highway Department in the 1970s, Northshore Forest Products, Leo Shilts Logging and several different construction companies, but retired from Northland Construction out of Duluth in 1998.
Floyd enjoyed fishing, golf, four-wheeling, traveling in his motor home, mowing grass, reading Louis L’Amour, playing cards with friends, feeding the deer, and plowing snow. He especially loved decorating his yard before Christmas by hanging up thousands of Christmas lights, lighting up the Cramer Road.
He is preceded in death by his parents; half brother Karl Johnson; half sister Evelyn Eide; wives Karen and Barbara, daughter Brenda and husband Ken Waltz; son-in-law Jeff Frahm; and granddaughter Debbie Firn.
He is survived by his siblings – brothers Roy (Margaret) and Harry (Bev); sisters Betty, Merle and Harriet, as well as six sons, Brian (Cheryl), Tim (Mary), Marshall, Greg (Debbie), Rodney (Toni), and Michael (Jessie) and his daughter, Renee Frahm; as well as 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his faithful and loyal companions, his adopted dog Sandy and his cat, Crumpets.
