Ninety-three tennis players, making up 143 entries in various events, participated in the 34th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament and Fisherman’s Picnic Jr. Tennis Tournament, Aug. 4-8, at the Cook County public tennis courts in Grand Marais. The weather was great and the tournament went smoothly. Visiting tennis players enjoyed the tournament and our beautiful new facility.
Thirty-one junior players competed in the tournament. Everyone was able to play at least two matches with a consolation round for the first match losers. The regular matches consisted of 2 of 3 sets and the consolation matches consisted of an 8-game pro set. Making it to championships were:
Boys’ 16 Singles:
David Bergstrom (Grand
Marais) won the exciting
championship match, defeating
Jakob Bartels, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-1.
Lars Scannell (GM) won the
consolation championship
match, defeating Paul Raner
(Clear Lake, IA), 8-1.
Boys’ 14 Singles:
Lars Scannell won the championship,
defeating Tom Prittinen,
6-2, 6-2. Daniel Ahrendt won
the consolation championship,
defeating Dalton Werckman, 8-4.
Boys’ 12 Singles:
Pete Summers (GM) defeated
Logan Scott, 6-1,7-5. Pete came
back from a 5-0 deficit in the
second set to win. Rudy Lipovetz
defeated his brother Joe in the
consolation championship
match, 9-8(5).
Boys’ 14 Doubles –
3-team round-robin
competition:
Jamie Wick and Daniel Ahrendt
(both from GM) were champions,
defeating Tom Prittinen
and Pete Summers, 6-2, 6-0,
and Logan Scott and Dalton
Werckman, 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. Tom

Girls’ 16 Doubles –
3-team round-robin
competition:
Jordee Matson (Neebing, ONT)
and Megan Skorich (Virginia,
MN) were champions, defeating
Shelby Ahrendt (GM)
and Cecilia Schnobrich (GM),
6-1,6-0 and Libby and Molly
Zafft (Grand Marais), 6-0, 6-1.
Girls’ 16 Singles:
Jordee Matson won the championship
defeating Allison
Malmsten 6-1, 6-1. Cecilia
Schnobrich won the consolation
championship when Shelby
Ahrendt had to retire because of
injury during the first game.
Girls’ 14 Singles:
Emma Bartels (Roseville, MN)
won, defeating Libby Zafft,
6-3,6-0. Hattie Scott won the
consolation championship,
defeating Sarah Ismail, 8-3.
Girls’ 12 Singles:
Sarah Ismail defeated Anna Letto
(Excelsior, MN), 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Adults
Sixty-two adult tennis players
competed. The50 and over
matches on Thursday and
Friday, consisted of 2 sets and a
match tiebreak (10 pts.) when
opponents split sets. All other
matches consisted of 2 of 3 sets.
Men’s 50 Singles: Marv
Weber won the championship,
defeating Scott Malmsten, 6-1,
7-6 (3).
Men’s 50 Doubles:
Jim Swifka (Green Bay, WI) and
Marv Weber won, defeating Don
Herron and Carl Johnson, 7-6
(5), 6-3.
Mixed 50 Doubles:
Kathy Bolstad (GM) and Carl
Johnson won the championship,
defeating Don and Carolyn
Herron, 6-3, 6-3.
Women’s 50 Doubles:
Charlene Ackley and Virginia
Garlock defeated Loa Ann Coyle
and Cindy Sharpe (both of
Plymouth), 6-2, 6-2.
Men’s 65 Doubles:
Carl Johnson and Marv Weber
won the championship, defeating
John Jackson and Robert Brush,
6-1, 6-0.
Mixed 65 Doubles:
Dorothy and John Jackson
(Minnetonka) defeated Marilyn
and Robert Brush (Saint Paul),
7-6 (6), 6-2.
Men’s Open Singles:
David Bergstrom won, defeating
Mark Summers, 6-1, 6-4.
Men’s Open Doubles:
Jason Muhl and Bryan Turunen
won the championship, defeating
Bill and Will Joynes, 6-3, 6-0.
Men’s 3.5 Singles:
Reid Anderson won, defeating
Bryce Werckman, 7-5,6 -3.
Women’s Open Singles:
Jordee Matson defeated Rachael
Renneisen (Ft. Lauderdale, FL),
6-4, 6-1.
Women’s Open Doubles:
Dorothy Jackson and Laural
Swifka won, defeating Jordee

championship, defeating Jordee
