Ninety-three tennis players, making up 151 entries in various events, participated in the 35th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament, at the public tennis courts in Grand Marais. The weather was great and the participants and spectators enjoyed the competitive play and social aspect of this popular tournament.
Twenty-six junior participants, making up 33 entries in various events, participated in the 2011 Jr. Tennis Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 3 – 4. The numbers were down a little bit, but the quality of play wasn’t. Everyone was able to play at least two matches with a consolation round for the first match losers. The regular matches consisted of two sets and a 10-point match tiebreak if players split sets and the consolation matches consisted of an eight-game pro set.
In the Boys’ 16 Singles Jakob Bartels (Roseville) won the championship, defeating Lars Scannell (Grand Marais) in a tough match, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Dominik Kraemer (Brainerd) won the consolation championship defeating Jack Bray (Maple Grove), 8-1.
In the Girls’ 16 Singles Mackenzie Rixe (Rogers) won the championship defeating, Adrienne Irmer (Minnetonka), 6-0, 6-2. Emma Bartels (Roseville) won the consolation championship in a close match, 8-7 (3).
In the Boys’ 14 Singles Pete Summers (Grand Marais) won the championship by defeating Dalton Werckman (Foley) in a close match, 6-4,7-5. Jamie Wick (Grand Marais) won the consolation championship, defeating Daniel Ahrendt, (Grand Marais) 8-6, and Ben Mattson (Golden Valley), 8-3.
In the Girls’ 14 Singles three-person round-robin competition, Grace Flink (Woodlands, TX) won the championship by defeating Hattie Scott (Oak Park), 6-2,6- 0, and Sarah Ismail (Hovland), 6-0,6-0. In the other match, Ismail (Hovland) defeated Scott in a close match, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In the Boys’ 12 Singles 3-person round-robin competition, Logan Scott (Oak Park) won the championship by defeating Zachary Lawrence (Eagan), 6-0,6-1, and Sam Sajdak (Pella, IA), 6-0,6-1. In the other match, Lawrence defeated Sajdak, 6-1, 6-2.
In the Girls’ 16 Doubles event, Grace Flink (Woodlands, TX) and Summer Wheeler (Spring, TX) won the championship by defeating Shelby Ahrendt (Grand Marais) and Cecilia Schnobrich (Grand Marais), 6-1,6-2.
In the Boys’ 14 Doubles three-team round-robin competition, Daniel Ahrendt and Lars Scannell won the championship by defeating Pete .Summers and Jamie Wick, 6-1,6-3, and Connor Scott (Oak Park) and Logan Scott (Oak Park), 6-0,6-3. In the other match, Summers and Wick defeated Connor and Logan Scott, 6-2,6-2.
Sixty-seven tennis players, making up 118 entries, competed in various adult events. Competitors in these events also played two sets and a 10-point match tiebreak if they split sets.
In the Men’s 50 Singles Patrick Shanahan (Thunder Bay) won the championship by defeating Marv Weber (Appleton), 6-3,6-2.
In the Women’s 50 Singles event, Paulene McGowan (Thunder Bay, ON) won the championship by defeating Elizabeth Perry (Grand Marais), 6-2,6-1.
In the Men’s 65 Doubles Carl Johnson (Green Valley, AZ) and Marv Weber won the championship defeating Rod Wannebo (Grand Marais) and George Oullis (Grand Marais), 6-0,4-2 Ret (inj).
In the Mixed 50 Doubles Laural and Jim Swifka (Green Valley, AZ) won the championship by defeating Phyllis Oldenburg (Prior Lake) and John Muus (Grand Marais), 6-0,6-0.
In the Men’s 50 Doubles 3-team round-robin competition, Jim Swifka and Marv Weber won the championship by defeating Scott Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and John Muus 6-7 (5), 6-0,1-0 (3), and Don Herron (Dent) and Carl Johnson 7-6 (5), 6-4. In the other match, Bergstrom and Muus defeated Herron and Johnson, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
In the Women’s 50 Doubles 3-team round-robin competition, Dorothy Jackson (Minnetonka) and Laural Swifka won the championship by defeating Lee Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and Kathy Bolstad (Grand Marais), 6-3,6- 0, and Carolyn Herron (Dent) and Kathryn Weber (Appleton, WI), 6-1,6-1. In the other match, Bergstrom and Bolstad defeated Herron and Weber, 6-3,7-5.
In the Men’s Open Singles David Bergstrom won the championship, defeating Guthrie Coughlin (Staples), 6-2,6-2.
In the Women’s Open Singles Jordee Matson (Neebing, ONT) won the championship, defeating Mikinzee Salon (Pillager), 6-4,6-0.
In the Men’s 3.5 Singles Bryce Werckman (Foley) won the championship, defeating Pete Summers, 6-0,6-1.
In the Women’s 3.5 Singles three-person round-robin competition, Monica Schliep (Duluth) won the championship by defeating Andrea Lipovetz (Duluth), 6-2,7-5, and Molly Zafft (Grand Marais), 6-1,6-0. In the other match, Lipovetz defeated Zafft, 6-3,6- 1.
In the Men’s Open Doubles Kevin and Guthrie Coughlin (Staples) won the championship, defeating Pepe Garieri (Thunder Bay) and Brad Salatino (Thunder Bay), 6-3,6- 4.
In the Women’s Open Doubles Lee Bergstrom and Rachael Renneisen ((Ft. Lauderdale, FL) won the championship, defeating Jordee Matson and Megan Skorich, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
In the Mixed Open Doubles Rachael Renneisen and David Bergstrom won the championship, defeating Jerry Lipovetz (Duluth) and Kris Teberg (Saginaw), 6-3,6-1.
In the NTRP Combined Mixed 7.0 Doubles Tony and Julia Rau (Newport) won the championship, defeating Sara Raner and Tyler Sajdak, 6-3,6- 1.
In the NTRP Combined Men’s 7.0 Doubles threeteam round-robin competition, Douglas Scott (Oak Park) and Bryce Werckman (Foley) won the championship by defeating Monte McIlroy (Golden Valley) and Tony Rau (Newport), 6-1,6-0, and Phil Raner (Clear Lake, IA) and Jeff Sajdak, Walkover-inj. In the other match, McIlroy and Rau defeated Phil Raner and Jeff Sajdak, 6-3,4-2 (Ret.-inj).
In the NTRP Combined Women’s 7.0 Doubles threeteam round-robin competition, Marilyn Brush (St. Paul) and Paulene McGowan (Thunder Bay, ON) won the championship by defeating Kathy Bolstad and Elizabeth Perry 6-4,6-1, and Molly and Libby Zafft (Grand Marais), 6-2,6-2. In the other close match, Bolstad and Perry defeated Molly and Libby Zafft, 6-3,3-6,1-0 (7).
The proceeds from the Fisherman’s Picnic tennis tournaments will go toward helping support the varsity tennis programs at Cook County High School.
