The 41st annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament was held Friday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 6 at the public tennis courts in Grand Marais. The weather cooperated enough to finish all of the matches and make it an enjoyable event for the participants. My Sister’s Place and the Cook County Tennis Association provided a nice barbecue lunch on Saturday. There were only 32 tennis players making up 48 entries this year, but all those who participated had a great time and had nothing but positive comments about the tournament. The results of the six events or divisions in the tournament are listed below.
Three players participated in the Men’s Open Singles round-robin event. Jason Horychuk (Thunder Bay) was the champion, defeating Mark Summers (Grand Marais) 6-2, 6-1 and Jonathan Gould (Minneapolis) 6-2, 6-4. Jonathan Gould defeated Mark Summers 6-0, 6-0 to finish as runner-up.
In the Men’s 50 Singles quarterfinals, Terence Borgerding (Monticello, Minn.) defeated Alan Humphreys (Thunder Bay) 6-3, 6-3 and Robert Gordon (Savannah, Ga.) defeated Ron Filstrup (St. Paul) 7-6 (4), 1-6, 1-0 (12) in a match tiebreak. Andrew MacArthur (Plymouth, Minn.) and Tim Theisen (Maple Grove, Minn.) received byes. In the semifinals, Terry Borgerding defeated Andrew MacArthur 6-3, 6-3 and Tim Theisen defeated Bob Gordon 6-0, 6-0. Terry Borgerding won the competitive championship match, defeating Tim Theisen 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Andy MacArthur won the consolation championship by defeating Ron Filstrup 6-1, 6-1.
In the Women’s Open Singles quarterfinals, Kim Christopher (Thunder Bay) defeated Julie Wulf (Jordan, Minn.) 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals, Kim Christopher defeated Leeann Ryder (Thunder Bay) 7-6 (4), 6-1 and Elizabeth Larson (Eden Prairie) defeated Anna Braun (Carver, Minn.) 6-0, 6-0. In the championship match, Elizabeth Larson defeated Kim Christopher 6-2, 6-4.
In the Men’s Open Doubles semifinals, Robert Gordon (Savannah, Ga.) and Al Logrono (Chisholm, Minn.) defeated Will Joynes (New Hope, Minn.) and Bill Joynes (Golden Valley, Minn.) 7-6 (4), 6-4 and Jason Horychuk (Thunder Bay) and Alan Humphreys (Thunder Bay) defeated Terence Borgerding (Monticello) and Andrew MacArthur (Plymouth, Minn.) 6-1, 6-2. In the championship match, Jason Horychuk and Alan Humphreys defeated Bob Gordon and Al Logrono 6-1, 6-3.
In the Women’s Open Doubles quarterfinals, Lee Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and Rachael Renneisen (Rochester) defeated Lynn Chalmers (Green Valley, Ariz.)) and Janet Hadley (Green Valley) 6-3, 6-1 and Linda Haller (Minneapolis) and Barbara Miller (Burnsville) defeated Andrea McMillen (Silver Bay) and Colleen Wallin (Two Harbors) 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, Lee Bergstrom and Rachael Renneisen defeated Anna Braun (Carver) and Jolie Wulf (Jordan) 6-1, 6-0 and Kimberly Christopher (Thunder Bay) and Leeann Ryder (Thunder Bay) defeated Linda Haller and Barbara Miller in a close match tiebreak 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8). In the championship match, Kim Christopher and Leeann Ryder defeated Lee Bergstrom and Rachael Renneisen 7-5, 6-2. Lynn Chalmers and Janet Hadley won the consolation championship by defeating Andrea McMillen and Colleen Wallin 6-4, 6-2.
In the Mixed Open Doubles quarterfinals, Jonathan Gould (Minneapolis) and Elizabeth Larson (Eden Prairie) defeated Tim Scannell (Grand Marais) and Lynn Swanson (Grand Marais) 6-0, 6-0, Janet Hadley (Green Valley) and Carl Johnson (Green Valley) defeated Ron Filstrup (St. Paul) and Linda Wright (Burnsville) 6-0, 6-2 and Brad Salatino (Thunder Bay) and Leeann Ryder (Thunder Bay) defeated Albert and Rowena Logrono (Chisholm) 6-0, 6-3. In the semifinals, Jason Horychuk (Thunder Bay) and Rachael Renneisen (Rochester) defeated Jonathan Gould and Elizabeth Larson in a close match tiebreak 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (4) and Brad Salatino and Leeann Ryder defeated Carl Johnson and Janet Hadley 6-2, 6-2. In the championship match, Jason Horychuk and Rachael Renneisen defeated Brad Salatino and Leeann Ryder in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Al and Rowena Logrono won the consolation championship by defeating Tim Scannell and Lynn Swanson 6-4, 6-0.
