The thought struck like a dull thunderbolt. Fish eat bugs. Bugs eat us. We eat fish. Does that make us cannibals?
Think about it, but not too hard.
Now that I have your attention, let’s get to the fish report.
With the temperatures warming up, the fish bite has also warmed. So too, has the mosquito and blackfly bite. In fact, if the fish aren’t happy to see you, the bugs will be sure to make their presence known. When you do get to your boat or are wading in a stream, remember to bring bug dope. It might not help much, but you can say you tried to keep the pesky bugs off you.
Tyson at the Beaver House had a great report this week. “The bass, brook trout, walleye, northern, splake and rainbow trout are all biting right now. If you fish for lake trout, stay in the shallows.”
“I haven’t heard much about people catching fish in Lake Superior yet. I know a few people have been getting out and catching a few lake trout, but I haven’t heard anything exciting.”
“Anglers are catching Coaster brook trout at the mouths of the Cascade, Temperance, and Poplar rivers using Little Cleos and Beaver Flicks,” said Tyson.
“Inland, bass are hitting on surface lures, and the walleyes are biting on leeches and float rigs. Beaver Flicks also work well to catch walleye and bass, he said, adding to use most lures of set-ups with minnows, crawlers or leeches.”
Some choice walleye lakes to try your luck on are: Devil Track, Two Island, Elbow, Crescent, Dick, and Ball Club. Minnows work as well for bait. Most lakes give up their walleye just before dark, but that isn’t to say you can’t catch walleye during daylight hours.
“Rainbows are being caught in area lakes,” said Tyson. The best ways to entice them to bite is to use crawlers and Beaver Flicks, Little Cleo’s, and floats with a crawler.
Another good, easy way to catch rainbow trout is to fish with nightcrawlers or worms using a slip sinker. Let the bait sink to the bottom then wait until you feel a fish slowly taking your line. Wait for a short while before setting your hook.
If you don’t mind fighting brush and bugs, small streams are giving up some nice catches of brook trout. Ten brookies is the limit but only catch as many as you will eat. Catching too many fish from a small stream ruins it. Save some fish for the next person who is willing to go out and work for them. Remember, a bad day of fishing beats a good day of work!
