Forrest at Hungry Jack Lodge said he has seen more grouse hunters than fishermen recently. He heard from a successful hunting party on September 21 that shot three grouse. Another group shot two up the Arrowhead Trail.
Scott Sorensen of Fly Box & Company reports that “pinks are in.” Scott said a few new ones slip in when it rains!
To catch those salmon, sinking patterns are working well, as well as egg patterns, Woolly Buggers, and Egg Sucking Leeches. Anglers are finding pinks at Cascade, Devil Track and Brule rivers.
Rainbow trout fishermen are doing well in the inland lakes using leech and minnow streamer patterns. Sorensen said fishing will get better as the water cools down.
Rainbow season ends Oct. 31.
Brook trout season is closed below the posted boundary, but it remains open above the posted boundary until September 30.
Lake trout season is open in inland lakes until Sept. 30.
Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charters reports that lots of lake trout are being caught from the surface to 60 feet deep. There are a few salmon around.
Kelly’s bear guiding service is wrapping up. The hunters he guided shot 19 good sized bears this year. Bear season ends at sundown on Oct. 16.
