The smell of bleach wafted through the harbor air near the Grand Marais Lions’ fish burger stand early this week.
Inside, Lyle Spry and Stewart Jackson were scrubbing every inch of the fish burger stand with bleach and water. They looked up and smiled when I poked my head inside to see what was going on. I declined an earnest invitation to get down on my knees and scrub alongside them.
Despite being turned down to host fireworks and a bandstand this weekend, the Lions were approved to run a fish burger stand and sell raffle tickets for a 50-50 drawing. All of the profits from the sale of fish burgers and raffle tickets will go back into the community through grants to non-profits.
Laurie Spry is in charge of ensuring the fish burger stand will comply with the new COVID-19 rules. She outlined the different station’s people will have to go to order and receive their food and drinks. It is a well thought out plan, but of course, people will have to comply and follow the procedures.
“The last thing we want to do is get people sick,” she said.
Because there was virtually no advertising this year, it’s hard to know how the fundraising will go. However, if you are hungry for a famous Lions’ club fish burger, you will have Friday, Saturday and Sunday to buy one. The stand will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
