Things are buzzing at the First & Second Thrift Store. Winter clothing is getting stashed as spring and summer items emerge from the storeroom. Carpets are being cleaned and windows washed in anticipation of the summer season. Shop hours will increase on May 15, when the shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The shop is seeing staff changes as well: Lois Johnson, who’s been with the store since its inception in 2007, will continue as summer coordinator, and Audrey Cain will continue as donations coordinator. Ann Marie Mershon has stepped in to oversee winter operations, supported by co-coordinators Barb Backlund, Emma Bradley, Chris Silence, and Jan Smith. These women are a solid team eager to provide the best of gently used items from clothing to household goods.

First & Second is an entirely volunteer enterprise where each volunteer dedicates their hourly “earnings” to local non-profits of their choice. Last year that was $16 an hour; the previous year it was $18. The thrift shop has donated over $700,000 to the community since it opened its doors in 2007.

If you have good quality used items to donate, call the store at 218-387-1826 to make an appointment. Donations are accepted on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Please write your name and phone number on every bag or box that you bring in.

Although many men and women contribute time to First & Second, they need more volunteers. If you’re able to volunteer for just a few hours a week, you could generate a significant donation for your favorite local non-profit. It’s a fun place to work and a golden opportunity to give back to the community. Interested? Contact Ann Marie Mershon at 218-387-2245.
