As the first dusting of snow covered the ground in Minnesota, the St. Paul Ski Club’s finest jumpers were in New York for the Lake Placid Flaming Leaves Festival. This kickoff event for the 2010 ski jumping season included U.S. Nationals competition on Oct. 10 and an NYSEF Super Tour competition on Oct. 11.

Brian Wallace, grandson of Grand Marais residents Lyle and Delores Saethre, competed in the national tournament and was a winner of the junior division in Sunday’s competition. He also placed 21st in the open class for the national championships on Saturday.

On Sunday, high winds made for dangerous conditions on the big hill. Judges ended the competition after one round of jumping. Still, St. Paul skiers finished well. Brian Wallace was first, teammates Christian Friberg was seventh, and Trevor Edlund was 15th. Karin Friberg was seventh in the women’s class. It was a great weekend for US ski jumpers who are looking forward to another successful season and a good showing in the 2010 Olympics.

Brian’s parents are Mark and Kathy Wallace of Woodbury, MN. His sister Elizabeth also jumps and was a forejumper at last year’s Junior Olympics.

Brian will be returning to Lake Placid after Christmas for the North American Junior Championships and World Junior Team Try-Outs. The World Junior team is a five-man team that will go to Hinterzarten, Germany in January leading up to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Brian recently took a break from ski jumping. He and his dad, Mark, visited Grand Marais and went hunting.
