Snow has been falling as fast as the temperature, and this morning we were surprised to see the lake covered in white as far as we could see. Four wheelers and snowmobiles have been leaving tracks in the freshly powdered ditches, and my diesel pickup truck no longer likes to start, winter is upon us.
It is always neat to see the first ice as we approach the winter season. It appeared we were going to have ice a few weeks ago, but the weather turned warmer, the wind began to howl, and the lakes decided to stay open a little longer. I was told that the west end of Devil track lake did not have the same snow coverage that we had on the east end, but it is still a sign of what’s coming.
We are closing the restaurant for the next two weeks to take a Thanksgiving vacation with our family from Iowa and do some maintenance and cleaning around the lodge before re-opening on Friday, November 30th. Two weeks will not seem long enough, especially when half of it will be spent traveling, but any break is going to be great for all of us after the busy summer season.
Before buying Skyport Lodge we were given a lot of friendly advice, some good and some bad, but everyone agreed that it is much more work than anyone could ever imagine, and they were right.
Some days are great and other days I wish I had never gotten out of bed, but we are slowly learning who we are and how to make it all work. See you in December.
