Firewood is stolen from Grand Marais yard

At least two cords of wood were stolen from Larry and Laura Marxen’s woodpile while they were sleeping. Someone pulled out the smaller diameter 8-foot lengths and hauled the wood away, possibly to re-sell it. A brazen thief stole two or more cords of 8-foot length birch firewood from the yard of Grand Marais residents Larry and Laura Marxen on Thursday night, April 25.

The Marxens live on the corner of 204 N. Broadway Avenue, just across the street from Johnson’s Grocery store.

“My bedroom is about 15 feet from the woodpile so I can’t imagine how I wouldn’t have heard someone taking wood from the pile,” Larry said. “I feel disheartened. I feel violated. It’s only a couple of hundred dollars for the wood, but I can’t imagine someone doing this. They picked through the pile and took the smaller logs out. How I didn’t wake up, or my wife or dog didn’t wake up, I don’t know.”

If anyone has any idea who took the wood, please contact the Cook County Sheriff ’s office at 387-3030.
