Grand Marais firefighters investigate the cause of smoke in unit No. 11 of the Grand Marais Gateway Lodge on Sunday, June 24. The cause of the smoke was an overheated bathroom ceiling fan.

The Grand Marais Fire Department was paged to a possible fire at the Grand Marais Gateway Lodge (formerly Tomteboda Motel) in Grand Marais at approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. The caller reported “heavy smoke” coming from one of the motel units. All off the guests had been evacuated.

Grand Marais First Responders and Cook County Ambulance also responded, standing by in case they were needed. Firefighters in turnout gear entered room No. 11 to try to see where the smoke was coming from. It was determined that the smoke had been caused by a bathroom ceiling fan that overheated and caught fire.

The fan was pulled out of the ceiling and placed outside. Firefighters also opened up a hole in the ceiling to ensure that fire from the overheated fan had not spread. By 7:17 p.m. the smoke had cleared and the fire department and other responders were clear of the scene.
