A man is homeless after his house burned on April 24, 2023.
The Maple Hill Fire Department, Grand Marais Fire Department, Cook County Ambulance, and Cook County Sheriff ’s Deputy Christopher Schrupp responded to the fire.
Harlon Schwab told Deputy Schrupp that he had cleaned the ash from his fireplace and placed the ash inside a bin on his porch. Harlan then proceeded to eat lunch and take a nap. When he awoke, his house was on fire. Harlan said he was trapped and had to jump through a window to get out. He suffered some burns on his head and was transported to the North Shore Hospital.
Harlan said he didn’t have any insurance on his house because he couldn’t afford it. So everything he owned was inside the house. A friend let him stay the night, but Harlan, who lived alone, is now homeless.
