Fire burns sauna

On Friday morning, February 4, a fire burned a sauna on South Shore Drive, Devil Track Lake.

The Grand Marais and Maple Hill fire departments and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded to the blaze. The fire was reported to dispatch at 7:06 a.m.

Deputy Chris Schrupp responded to the fire at 1079 South Shore Drive. In his report, Schrupp stated, “When I arrived, Mark Swenson and Joshua Segal were throwing snow on a sauna that was on fire. The sauna was about 15 feet from the residence.”

The owners of the residence, Mark and Dawn Swenson, had friends Joshua and Tiffany Segal staying with them for the weekend. They used the sauna the night of February 3. Before going to bed, they noticed the wood fire was still smoldering from the sauna fireplace, but they thought it was almost out. “They went to bed and woke up in the morning to find the sauna building fully engulfed in fire. The fire was so hot that it cracked the glass on two windows of Mark and Dawn’s residence,” Schrupp reported.

Grand Marais and Maple Hill fire departments extinguished the fire. There was no report of injury.
