Deer rifle season came to an abrupt end for several hunters on the opening weekend of deer season 2013.
Two men were caught hunting over bait on opening day, November 9, 2013. Working on a tip from the public, Conservation Officers Darin Fagerman and Mary Manning caught James Paul Nagorski, 35, of Lino Lakes, Minn. and James Zigmund Nagorski, 70, of Woodbury, Minn. hunting from a ground blind and stand over bait.
Neither man had taken a deer before the conservation officers encountered them. They were each charged with a petty misdemeanor hunting with aid or use of bait. They were fined $300 plus court costs for a total of $390 each. Both men also had their firearms seized.
On November 11, CO Wahlstrom encountered a deer hunter walking down the road in the Lutsen area. Wahlstrom stopped to conduct a routine license check and the man admitted he did not have a license. Nicholas Hall, 18, of Rural Hall, North Carolina, said he planned to use his father’s license tag if he shot a deer. Wahlstrom said that would also be a violation. Hall was fined for hunting deer without a license and was fined $300. With court costs, his total penalty was $375. His firearm was also seized for forfeiture.
CO Fagerman said he and CO Manning, as well as CO Thomas Wahlstrom, worked together following up on calls from the public on opening weekend. “With so much ground to cover, we rely heavily on the hunters to turn in poachers,” said Fagerman.
