The filing period for all three West End townships opens soon and will remain open through 5 p.m. January 15, 2019. The last day (most) candidates can withdraw is 5 p.m. on January 17.
Each township is seeking candidates for office; most are three-year terms as supervisor and two-year terms as clerk or treasurer. All of the townships call for a $2 filing fee to apply.
In Lutsen, there is one supervisor position open for a three-year term and the treasurer position is open for a two-year term.
Affidavits of Candidacy are available in the county Auditor’s Office or at the Lutsen town office, which shall be filed in person with the Lutsen Town Clerk, Sharon Hexum- Platzer, 116 Caribou Trail, Lutsen.

The current Lutsen supervisors are board chair Andrew Beavers, Christine Ordmann, and Rae Piepho. John Groth serves as the treasurer and Sharon Hexum- Platzer is the town clerk. Rae has indicated she will run again for her supervisor position and to date John has not filed to run again.
The compensation for the Lutsen Town Board is $85 per meeting. For work outside of township meetings, and the treasurer is paid $20 per hour.
Lutsen meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.
Schroeder Township
Just like Lutsen, there is one three-year term open for supervisor, and the two-year term is open to fill the treasurer position. The filing period begins Jan. 1, 2019 and runs through 5 p.m. on Jan.15, 2019.
Affidavits of Candidacy shall be filed with Schroeder Township Clerk Doug Schwecke, located at 74 Sunrise Drive, Schroeder. Phone: 663- 7599, or at the Schroeder Town Hall, 124 Cramer Road, 1-5 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2019.
The last day for a candidate to withdraw is 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2019.
Current supervisors are Tina McKeever, vice chair, Bruce Martinson, chair, and Rick Anderson. Carla Menssen is the treasurer, Doug Schwecke the clerk and Gale Ring is the deputy clerk.
Schroeder town board members are paid $75 for each monthly meeting and receive $25 per hour for work outside of the meetings. The clerk and the treasurer are reimbursed at a rate of $75 per meeting and $20 per hour outside of the meetings.
Township elections and annual meetings are held the second Tuesday of March, which will be March 13. The election of officers is held the same day from 5 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.
Schroeder Township supervisors meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall, 124 Cramer Road.
Tofte Township
The theme continues in Tofte. There is one supervisor position open for a three-year term and the two-year treasurer position open for election.
The filing period begins on January 2, 2019, and runs for two weeks, with the last day to file on January 15, 2019, at 5 p.m.
Tofte township clerk Barb Quade will be in the Tofte Town Hall on the last day of filing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The last day to withdraw from the race is 5 p.m. on January 17, 2019.

A request for an absentee ballot may be made with Quade by mailing the application to P.O. Box 2293, Tofte, beginning Feb. 8, 2019.
Craig Horak, Sarah Somnis and Sam Crowley are the supervisors. Richard (Dan) Shirley is the treasurer; Quade is the clerk.
