WTIP North Shore Community Radio is pleased to welcome back birding expert Molly Hoffman’s Field Notes.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning beginning March 11, WTIP listeners will be able to join Molly on a guided walk through the North Woods.

“It’s the perfect location for a bird walk,” says Hoffman. “The Superior National Forest is part of an area in North America which has more species of breeding birds than any other area in North America.”

Field Notes
brings a realistic birding experience to WTIP’s listeners. That’s because Hoffman uses only one recorder to capture the sounds, so that her voice narrative is created live in the field the same time as the bird and environmental sound. It is meant to simulate the situation as it would be if she was the guide and the radio audience was participating in the guided walk. This way, the sound more closely represents what a person actually experiences in this outdoor environment.

Some of WTIP’s listeners may already be familiar with Field Notes,
which aired weekdays on WTIP for several years when WTIP first came on the air in 1998. Hoffman’s Field Notes
culminated in the production of two CD compilations: Bird
Songs of the Northern Woods Volumes I
and II,
which are available for sale at various businesses along the North Shore.

“We are thrilled to welcome Field Notes
back to the air,” said WTIP’s Executive Director Deb Benedict. “Birding is an important aspect of the culture here, and Molly Hoffman produces a quality feature that represents and shares this experience with WTIP’s listeners in the area and beyond.”

Hoffman became a birder following a 1970 course in ornithology at the University of Minnesota, Duluth which was part of a degree in biology. More information is available on WTIP’s website at www.wtip.org.
