Minnesota’s 16-day deer hunting season ended with 111,000 deer registered by rifle hunters, down 31,000 from last year.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the 22 percent drop was expected because it was a bucks-only hunt for most areas of the state. The DNR held does out of the hunt (for most of the state) to protect the herd, which has fallen off the last couple of years due to hunting and long, cold, snowy winters, which are tough on deer.
When early antlerless, special hunts and firearm seasons are added up, a total of 127,000 deer have been harvest from Minnesota in 2014.
A special muzzleloader deer-hunting season opened November 29 and ran until December 14. An archery deer-hunting season opened September 13 and will last until December 31.
