Fentanyl arrest made in Lutsen

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office has released information on the use and distribution of fentanyl in the Lutsen area. An anonymous tipster contacted the Sheriff ’s Office to report individuals who receive fentanyl in the mail and then distribute the drugs at parties attended by resort employees.

On September 20, the Sheriff ’s Office was advised that mail addressed to the subject of a drug investigation had been delivered to him at Cascade Resort. Chief Deputy Will Sandstrom, Deputy Joe Zallar and U.S. Border Patrol Agent Heidi Klozotsky along with her canine, Dorr, proceeded to the lodge. Agent Klozotsky had Dorr sniff the mail that was delivered and the dog indicated the presence of a controlled substance in the priority mail box addressed to an employee of the lodge.

Law enforcement personnel waited for someone to claim the box and two people were detained. Jeremy Jeska was charged with a controlled substance violation and was booked into the Cook County jail. The package intercepted by law enforcement contained a vial of liquid that matched a vial located in Jeska’s pocket when he was arrested.

At the time of arrest, he was in possession of liquid fentanyl, and powdered cocaine. The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office said the liquid fentanyl was ordered online at a price of $250 a bottle and it is believed that the fentanyl solution is at a .003g concentration.

Sheriff Pat Eliasen said, “It should be noted that the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office is aware that fentanyl is in the community and there were several overdoses associated with the drug over the summer. Some of the overdoses occurred at an area resort inside staff housing.”

The Cook County News-Herald reported on that June 13 incident in which two men needed urgent medical attention after consuming fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid analgesic that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. In its prescription form, fentanyl is known by such names as Actiq®, Duragesic®, and Sublimaze®. Street names for fentanyl or for fentanyl laced heroin include Apache, China Girl, China White, Dance Fever, Friend, Goodfella, Jackpot, Murder 8, TNT, and Tango and Cash.
