All hands on deck! Volunteers needed! Great opportunity for communitybuilding!

A major food-packing event will take place at the Community Center in Grand Marais on Saturday, May 21, and the day is sure to be filled with camaraderie and good wishes for those less fortunate. The event is the culmination of a year’s worth of fundraising for Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit hunger relief organization.

According to its website, “Feed My Starving Children [FMSC] is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. …Feed My Starving Children provides life-saving meals to people who need them most all over the world — from countries affected by natural disaster to places enduring economic despair. …In 67 countries, our food powerfully enables people to get ahead. It’s a hand up, not a hand out. … FMSC believes in sustainability – we don’t simply send one shipment of food to a country. Instead, we continue to provide our mission partners with the food they need to maintain their feeding programs.”

The food will arrive in bulk by semi with the materials needed to pack it into individual servings.

Volunteers can choose among shifts that will run from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m., and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. They are asked to arrive 30 minutes early for orientation. Lunch and dinner will be provided. Co-organizer Jamie Ryan hopes people will sign up for multiple shifts.

“We’re strongly, strongly, strongly encouraging families, sports teams, and businesses to participate together,” Ryan said. “A lot of the businesses down in the Cities use this for staff development.” An event like this is good for team-building, he said, because working on a common cause and sharing a positive experience draws groups together.

In order to be most efficient, volunteers are asked to pre-register. Groups need to register by May 11. This can be done online at the Feed My Starving Children website, by emailing Evangelical Free Church Youth Pastor Caleb White at white.calebs@gmail.com, or by calling White at the church at (218)387-1565 or Jamie Ryan at (218)370-0262.
