Feed My Starving Children campaign continues

Although the actual packaging of food for the Feed My Starving Children program won’t take place until April and May, there is still an opportunity to support this worthwhile North Shore effort. Before the mobile pack units arrive in Two Harbors and in Grand Marais, there must be enough money to fund the visit— $19,000 per event. The community can help by making financial donations, which Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be matching with $10,000.

Gary Zinter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans said people may be wondering “what’s the rush?” since the events don’t take place until spring. Zinter explained that a third of the money for the mobile pack event is due Feb. 6; another third is due March 19 and finally the total must be paid May 21.

A number of local youths have been working hard to help Feed My Starving Children. In November 2010, youth groups from Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Free Church held a BBQ fundraiser to benefit Feed My Starving Children and the Cook County Food Shelf. Kids also hosted a luncheon at the Evangelical Free Church with proceeds going to Feed My Starving Children. Twenty local high school students also traveled to the Twin Cities to work at a packing site.

The youths encourage others to help out. Mark your calendar for one of the mobile pack events—Friday, April 8 in Two Harbors and Saturday, May 21 in Grand Marais. Each site will need 500 volunteers to help bag meals for hungry people.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), founded in 1987, is a non-profit 501(c) (3) Christian organization committed to “feeding God’s starving children, hungry in body and spirit.” FMSC has several permanent packing sites and five mobile pack units, or semis, which are able to bring the meal bagging experience to different communities. FMSC is headquartered in Coon Rapids, MN. In 2009, FMSC produced 96 million meals with more than 416,000 volunteers.

Nearly 18,000 children die each day from starvation or starvation-related causes.
