Fee-free citizen suggestions

With all the new people we have on the governing bodies of the city and county, and all the “changes” they think we need, I must respond.

First of all, no charge for my expertise. But if you would like to throw in a few hundred grand for me, fine, “consulting fees.”

First of all, the Highway 61 corridor. Fix what we have and clean up downtown first, clean up the alleys and clean off the sidewalks by the IGA to the library. Snow banks are not pretty to crawl over or walk in Highway 61.

Being more friendly I think we need more friendly bikers. They are subject to the same laws as automobiles. Some bikers are the most obnoxious people I know. They don’t stop for signs, yield when they should. I guess I’m the only one who notices that. Oh well.

As for the 61 corridor, we need some “round-abouts.” You know, the ones they have in Wisconsin. One by Eighth Avenue West and one at the stoplight would be really neat. It would bring Grand Marais into the ’90s. So let’s get with it.

Also more one-way streets.

As for the chevrons and signage on the Gunflint Trail, a roundabout between Devil Track River and the entrance to Hedstrom’s mill would be a must to slow traffic and cause confusion.

And how about some lights and flashing warning signs at The Pines so no one will hit those pretty guard rails. One more roundabout at the Greenwood Road would be nice.

I could come up with lots more “nice” things to make Grand Marais and Cook County more attractive to tourists but for now I’ll wait till I see these improvements.

Oh yeah, we need a big flashing sign for people to find the YMCA.
