December was such a fun month at the Senior Center. We started out the month with a “Treat Feast” sponsored by Nona Smith. The “Feast” included a delicious beef pot roast dinner, complete with all of the trimmings.
Birthdays are fun at the Senior Center. We enjoyed an 85th birthday party for Gladys Anderson on December 9, complete with decorations and a delicious cake baked by our volunteer Dorothy Oltean. The best part of the party was that Gladys realized that she is a year younger than she thought she was. For the past year she thought she was already 85 years old!
Our Holiday Party was a lot of fun. We played the Musical Tree Game. Nona Smith and Joyce Hagen were our winners. We also played our traditional Holiday Dice game and finished off the day with an Ice Cream Social. I guess that makes us true Minnesotans. Why is it that ice cream tastes so good in the winter? BRRR!
Fun flag making demo
Join us for a fun Flag Making Demonstration on Wednesday, January 14 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The demonstration is free and all ages are welcome!
Signature flags are individual inspirational flags that signify our specific interests. Think Garden Flags, or a wall hanging made of paper, wood or quilted fabric, or one made of woven fabric. The ideas are endless. The Northwoods Fiber Guild will be having an exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post beginning in July and we will be working on our own individual signature flags to hang as part of our display.
Trips and cards
With it being so darn cold, we are playing it safe this month and mostly staying close to home. We have just one more trip planned to the Grand Portage Casino. On Monday evening, January 19, we will be traveling to the Grand Portage Casino. Transportation is free. All trips receive $5 in free slot play and $5 off any entrée in the dining room.
We play 500 Friday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. We would like to see more folks come to play. It would be great fun to have multiple tables playing and a possible future tournament!
Stay warm and safe. We look forward to seeing you soon at your local Senior Center, home of the bottomless $1 cup of coffee!
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Cook County Senior Center, courtesy of Assistant Director Kristen Anderson.
