A motorcycle trip for a Wisconsin couple came to a tragic end at 3:06 p.m. on September 10 when Jane Sullivan Gregg, 63, left the roadway on the Gunflint Trail, near the Grand Marais water tower, suffering fatal injuries.
Jane Gregg and her husband, Raymond Gregg, 77, of St. Germain, Wisconsin, had ridden their motorcycles from Duluth to Grand Marais to see the Gunflint Trail. As they were heading back down the Trail, Jane Gregg, on her 1994 Honda VTX 1300 lost control as she rounded the corner by the Grand Marais water tower.
Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk said it appears that as Gregg made the corner, she downshifted into too low a gear, causing her to slow down too quickly. She lost control of the motorcycle and went into the ditch. The motorcycle landed on top of her, causing trauma to her chest.
Grand Marais First Responders and Cook County Ambulance responded and Gregg was transported to North Shore Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death was a torn aorta.
There was no sign of drug or alcohol use and Gregg was wearing a helmet.
