Fatal accident blocks Highway 61 near Gooseberry Falls




A two-vehicle car accident occurred on Highway 61 at the Gooseberry River at 6:02 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. The accident resulted in two fatalities and blocked the highway until nearly 11 a.m.

According to Minnesota State Patrol Sergeant Mark Baker, a 1991 Chevy S-10 pickup was traveling north when the driver, Aaron P. Nelson, 22 of Wrenshall, MN, lost control on the ice-covered bridge deck and entered the southbound lane. His pickup was broadsided by a 2002 Jeep Liberty on the passenger side. Baker said one of the vehicles caught fire.

Nelson and his passenger, whose name has not yet been released, were both killed.

The driver of the Jeep, Molly N. Gadsby, 23, Silver Bay, suffered minor injuries. She was transported to Lake View Hospital in Two Harbors.

Traffic from both directions was detoured around the scene on Highway 3.
