Nearly perfect running weather greeted the participants in this year’s 45th running of Grandma’s Marathon and 32nd year of the Garry Bjorklund half marathon with fast times recorded over both courses. Temperatures were in the low 60s and there was a nice tailwind helping the runners as they raced from Two Harbors to Duluth along the north shore of Lake Superior.
Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon
Daniel Kemboi, a Kenyon living in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, won his third half marathon. Daniel ran the 13.1-mile race in 1:02:03, taking an 18 second victory over Kiya Dandena.
Rosie Edwards won the women’s race with a time of 1:12:45. She finished 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Elena Hayday.
Because of the great weather 99.8 percent of field crossed the finish line. In all, 7,004 runners completed the 2022 Garry Bjorklund half marathon.
There were 2,716 men, 4,284 women, and one non-binary runner in the field. The average finishing time was 2:15:54

Grandma’s Marathon
There were 5,956 finishers (3,402 men, 2550 women and 2 non-binary) in this year’s 2022 Grandma’s Marathon. The average finishing time was 4:16:55.
Dominic Ondoro, Kenya and Grand Prairie, Texas, won with a time of 2:09:34, not far off of his Grandma’s Marathon record of 2:09:06 he set in 2014.
Return champion Dakotah Lindwurm, Egan, Minnesota, won the women’s race with a time of 2:25:01, the second fasted time recorded at Grandma’s. Dakotah finished 42 seconds ahead of Sarah Sellers who is from Ogden, Utah.
Men’s and women’s wheelchair record holders Aaron Pike and Susannah Scaroni both returned to defend their titles, and each did so, both breaking their own records in the process.
Pike won his fourth title with a time of 1:20:02, almost a minute faster than his previous mark.
Meanwhile Scaroni scorched the course in a world best time of 1:27:31, more than three minutes faster than her previous record. Scaroni’s time won’t stand as world record because Grandma’s is a point-to-point course with an elevation drop that isn’t allowed.
Local finishers
Last time I wrote about Reilly Wahlers she was senior at CCHS and she had placed 10th at the Minnesota State Ski championship in the Slalom race. Today Reilly has put her skis aside for running shoes and the 21-year-old is showing talent for long distance running. In her first marathon, Reilly was hoping to run the 26.2 miles in four hours. Coming by the 26-mile mark, it was clear that Reilly was going to break four hours, and she did, crossing the finish line in 3:56:01.
Brea Boomer, Duluth, finished in 4:16:11. The former Cook County High School basketball star and former Duluth East Girls’ head basketball coach is now a model working in New York City, but clearly she has taken some time out of her busy schedule to run.
