The Cook County Farm & Craft Market opens for its 15th season from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 in the Senior Center parking lot in Grand Marais.

All the members are excited about the season opening, said Carolyn Kopchik, market manager. She and her husband, John, own Lake Superior Logworks and sell handmade woodcarvings, cabin accents and soy candles.

“We’ve been a member for probably 12 years,” she said. “The market is really important in Cook County. It allows local craftspeople to showcase their quality, handmade products.”

The market also gives local growers a chance to sell their produce. Hopefully, growers will have some bedding plants to sell as well as tomato plants next week, she said. It’s been so cold and wet that everything has been slow to get going this year.

What you will be able to find is a selection of baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, cookies, scones, bread, jams and jellies and perhaps a pie or two.

A variety of woodcrafts, carvings, handmade jewelry, beadwork, original art and prints, pottery and ceramics, fiber arts, leatherwork, glasswork, log and barnwood furniture, herbal products, and baskets made by the 25 members in the market will be featured at booths and tables in the parking lot.

Also this year, for the first time the market is offering a space for informational tables by local civic organizations and groups. “We’re hoping to get more community involvement,” Kopchik said.

Groups which might be interested in participating or would like more information should call Kopchik at 387-9177 or e-mail ckopchik@gmail.com.

The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October as well as Saturday and Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July weekend and Labor Day weekend. Vendors sell during Fisherman’s Picnic as well.

The Cook County Farm & Craft Market has a Facebook page, too. Check for weekly updates.
