October is my favorite time of year. Yes, because I love Fall. But also, it is my birthday month. I was born in the 10th month, on the 10th day at 10 in the morning. I have a birth certificate signed by Roger McDonald MD saying this is the truth so help me, God. Because of this, my golden birthday was when I was 10. My favorite number is ten, and at one time, I have probably had ten pets under my roof. (At this time, we host four dogs and one very black cat named Salem.)
Twenty years ago in October, we moved to the small town of South Haven. We live very rural and nowhere near a city of any kind, but South Haven and Holthaus Haven have a nice ring. This home has become our haven. We love where we live. The neighbors and friends we have made are amazing. And we have what we wanted, roots in a friendly community to raise our children. Mike and I both had childhoods in small communities, and I wouldn’t know how to raise a “city kid” if I tried. Looking back, moving out of the city was the best decision ever.
The best part of Fall is the colors orange, red, purple, and green. Every angle of the woods looks like a Bob Ross canvas. And the leaves smell so calming, like a dark, sweet tea. I feel pretty in the Fall. I want to rest. Books. Naps. And Comfort foods. I recently had a somber day that was brightened by pumpkin bars and chicken with dumplings. It was still painful, but good food felt hopeful. I will be traveling to North Carolina next week with a side trip to Winston and Old Salem.
I look forward to learning more about this area and the town’s history, both fact and fiction. A beautiful place to celebrate the month of my birthday. Hugs and Peace, Sandy
