August has been a busy and fun-filled month for the residents at North Shore Health Care Center. Fisherman’s Picnic weekend brought many family and friends to visit, and to share in the activities. Several elders went on an outing to watch the Fisherman’s Picnic parade and take in the festivities. We want to thank the Lions Club for providing some delicious fish burgers for all the residents during the Picnic. They were a real treat!
Many hours were spent on the patio enjoying the beautiful August weather. Several residents participated in the “Minnow Race” competition held on August 21. There was a lot of laughter and sportsmanship exhibited as they cheered their minnows to the finish line.
As summer draws to an end, we’re hoping for some more sunshine and warm weather to enjoy time outdoors. September will find us doing more baking and fun fall crafts too.
The monthly birthday party will be held on September 12 at 3 p.m. to honor Mary Alice Hansen, Helene Smith, Audrey Pollock, Fern Lovaas, and Marcy Podas. Cake and ice cream will be served. Doug Sanders will be here too, playing our favorite piano tunes. Family and friends are welcome to join us.
We are looking forward to a visit from the Apple Valley Zoo Mobile on September 15. They will be bringing a variety of small animals to visit with the residents.
An outing to the Senior Center for lunch is planned for September 20, and another outing to Maple Hill for a fall leaf tour on September 24.
Music this month will feature Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Susan Scherer on Wednesdays, and a variety of live music throughout the month. Portage Band will once again be back for a dance on September 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. We welcome friends and family to join us for any of our music events.
The residents want to thank our Incredible Exchange student, Wyatt Hadley, who helped with activities most Wednesday and Thursday afternoons throughout the summer.
We also would like to thank Jan Parish, our volunteer gardener, who has so diligently kept our flower beds on County Road 7 looking so beautiful over the years. Jan will be moving from the area, and we are in need of a volunteer to fill her shoes. Please contact the Activity Office if you’re interested. We wish Jan well in her new ventures.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Health Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
