Fall fun at the Care Center

Many hands were on board on August 16 to help move many residents into their new, private rooms! It was a very busy day, but all was accomplished in one day and the residents were happy to be in their new homes. We want to thank the volunteers, friends, family, and staff who participated in this successful endeavor.

We have been very lucky to have had such nice weather this summer, and the residents are taking every opportunity they can to get outdoors. There is still a lot more outdoor fun to be had in September, so we are hoping for many more days of sunshine. We are planning an outing to Sawtooth Ridges to visit all our friends there on September 15. Another outing is planned for lunch at the Senior Center on September 22, and on September 27 we will take a fall leaf tour of Maple Hill.

Our last picnic of the season is planned for Labor Day. There will be hot dogs from the grill and all the picnic fixings!

The residents will be kicking off the football season with a Tailgate Happy Hour on September 13 at 2:30 p.m. with tailgate drinks, snacks, and fun.

Care Center residents have had a fun summer. It was a beautiful afternoon on the patio for “Hilja’s Hawaiian Happy Hour”—complete with piña coladas and Hawaiian snacks! (L-R) Sharon Eliasen, Phyllis Noyes, Jane Burley and Gloria Martineau.

The monthly birthday party will be held on September 14 at 3 p.m. to honor several residents who celebrate birthdays in September. Those residents are Bernice LeGarde, Helene Smith, Audrey Pollock, Sweeney Croft, and Marcy Podas. There will be plenty of cake and ice cream along with favorite piano tunes by Doug Sanders.

September 20 is National Centenarian Day, a day to recognize those who have reached the milestone birthday of 100 or more. Congratulations to Lu Pettijohn and Phyllis Noyes, our two centenarians! A social to honor Lu and Phyllis will be held on September 20 at 2 p.m. All are welcome.

As the weather begins to cool, it’s time to think of baking once again. Since zucchini seems to be in abundance this year, the residents will try their hand at making some zucchini fritters on September 30. The apples are also looking good. We’ll be trying some of those timeless apple recipes, and reminiscing about fall harvesting.

Live music this month will feature folk music with Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons, old country and gospel with Al Fuller on Mondays, and classic piano music with Susan Scherer on Wednesday nights. The band Portage will be back again on September 24 at 6:30 p.m., entertaining us with their country classics. The residents want to thank our talented musician volunteers who bring the joy of music to the Care Center. It brightens our days, and lifts our spirits!

Thanks is also in order this month to the hard-working Bethlehem quilters who donated eight homemade quilts to the Care Center. The hard work and love they so generously put into each quilt is greatly appreciated by residents and staff. The new quilts are a welcome addition to the home-like environment that we are striving for in our new facility.
