Just in time for the frolic of fall leaves and whispers of winter coming, a Fairy Library has been built for any lost sprite who needs a warm cozy place to read and rest!
The North Shore Wizard of Creative Works with Children, Dave Steckelberg, has finished the little cedar Fairy Library that Story Scouts and Minnesota Children’s Press of Grand Marais commissioned him to make. This library is part of an effort to increase Fairy habitat in Grand Marais and Cook County to improve screen-free imaginative child-culture in the area.
Note: The Library is open to all friendly sprites, not just Fairies: trolls, tomte, fossegrim, etc.
Six adorable Story Scouts of Minnesota Children’s Press’ Youth In Philanthropic Publishing (YIPP) committee and their leader, Anne Brataas, presented Dave with his check on Thursday, September 22. Once Dave was thanked for his great work, the children wrote notes on small pink sheets of paper, tucking them inside the library with bits of apple for any lucky fairy who comes by for a snack and a good read. The Story Scouts also deposited their first child-authored books in the new Fairy Library.
The Fairy Library has now moved from Dave’s workshop to its new home in Grand Marais–scavenger hunt alert–you’ll have to find it! It is open free of charge to all small sprites and children to leave and take small books written and illustrated by children.
However, the Fairy Library could be relocated for a time if it has a responsible sprite-loving sponsor. Businesses could inquire about having the library on their grounds or even in their store. A little reassurance here, fairies, sprites, trolls, and tomtes, are very quiet and would cause little if any disturbance. Sure, sometimes they giggle in that silly way that they giggle, dance, whir when they fly and wiggle, and it can be annoying when they get the hiccups, but that doesn’t happen very often. Not often at all, actually. Talk to Anne Brataas if you are interested in sponsoring the Fairy Library, or email her at anne@minnchildpress.org.
