Facilities update COVID-19 mask template

Cook County’s healthcare facilities have updated the pattern recommended for COVID- 19 hand sewn protective masks.

Cook County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Incident Co-Commander Grace Grinager said that the refinement request occurred during a briefing with local healthcare directors on Sunday.

“Healthcare needs are being refined as the situation evolves,” Grinager stated. “The updated mask recommendation has been developed utilizing input from staff. We ask that individuals creating hand sewn masks utilize the following guide.”

Instructions are as follows:

Cut two pieces of 10” x 8” fabric.

With right sides together, overlock long side (10”).

Turn right side out/ serged seams on the interior.

Overlock both open ends.

Fold serged ends over to create a ½” casing for the twill tape.

Cut twill tape at 39”. Mark twill tape at 18”, 3”, 18”. At the first mark, leaving an 18” tail at the top of the casing, fold casing over the twill tape, tack casing in place and sew 1/8” of an inch seam allowance (middle of serged edge) for entire length of casing- stop at end, pull twill tape to the 3” mark, tack at 3” mark, leaving 18” of twill tape at opposite end. Pulling will gather at the mask.

Repeat step 6 on other side.
