In the September 18 issue of the Cook County News-Herald there was an article about an airplane accident that happened in the late 1940’s. Butch Schulte, who submits photos to the Cook County News-Herald, said he was at the site of the accident.
“I just had to say that I witnessed the airplane accident at the airport in the late 40’s,” said Butch. “I suppose I must have been about six years old. They were giving rides at the airport, and I didn’t live very far away and just happened to be there watching. I remember that there was talk about the plane being over-loaded and one passenger was not going to load but the pilot assured them all that it would be okay. I watched the plane taxi down the field, lift off the ground and to me it looked like it crashed on 4th Ave, shortly past the end of the airfield,” said Butch.
One man, Sheriff Pat Bayle, would die in 1951 from his injuries suffered in the plane crash.
