A single vehicle accident on Highway 61 on Friday, November 29 resulted in a Grand Marais woman being extracted from her car with the Jaws of Life. Lynsey Smith, 30, was traveling west on the highway near Five Mile Rock at about 9:16 a.m. when her Chevy Tahoe left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Chris Thostenson said the Grand Marais Fire Department was paged and used extrication equipment to open the door. Grand Marais First Responders and Cook County Ambulance members were then able to safely remove Smith from the vehicle.
Smith was alone in the vehicle and she was wearing her seatbelt. She was transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital and then to a Duluth hospital where she was treated and released.
Smith told the State Patrol that she looked at traffic behind her and lost control. Witnesses gave statements that the vehicle was “driving erratically” before the crash.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
