Cook County Middle School students enjoyed a beautiful fall day outdoors on September 23. Students hiked at Cascade River, Pincushion Mountain, the Superior Hiking Trail and Kadunce River and reported on it through a photojournalism project.
All of the work is on display in the Middle School hallway, bringing the scenic outdoors into the school hallway. This reporter had the honor of judging the Photo Essay Contest and it was a very difficult job. All of the students took the assignment quite seriously and took beautiful photos and created eyecatching displays on poster board. Congratulations to all the Middle School students who took part.
Receiving first place in the contest were Emily Jacobsen and Sarah Toftey. The selfportrait the girls took of themselves peering into a leafy pond was very captivating. It was what made them stand out from the rest to earn the top spot. Their display was quite nice and choosing to make the pond photo larger than the others was a great design decision.
Second place went to Erica Weisberg with lovely photos of the Superior Hiking Trail. Erica’s photos had interesting angles and she earned points for finding a Shakespearean quote for the display. The quote? “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.”
Ian Nelson received third place. Ian got “bonus points” for his pencil sketches of fish and turtles to go along with this water-themed photos.
Fourth-place went to Hannah Toftey, who had very nice photos and an interesting overall layout, incorporating just a few strategically placed leaves and sticks.
If you’re at the school, stop by and check out the photo essays. They are all marvelous!
