Excelsior man charged in February golf cart incident

Brian Martin Hoven, 43, Excelsior, was sentenced May 12, 2014 for charges stemming from a February 22 incident in which Hoven reportedly stole a golf cart from maintenance staff at Eagle Ridge Resort at Lutsen Mountains.

When maintenance staff noticed an unauthorized person driving the golf cart, they drove after the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. The person driving the golf cart swore at the maintenance worker and continued driving. According to the arrest complaint, the person then used the golf cart to “ram” the pick up truck, causing significant damage to both the golf cart and the pick up truck.

The person eventually stopped at the golf course and walked down the Ski Hill Road toward Lutsen Resort. Cook County Law Enforcement was contacted and went to Lutsen Resort seeking a person who met the description of the suspected golf cart driver.

Hoven matched the description of the suspect and a sheriff deputy found him in his room at the resort. Hoven admitted to taking the golf cart. Hoven had a positive blood alcohol count of .09 according to a preliminary breath test. He was arrested for tampering with a motor vehicle, criminal damage to property in the 4th degree and careless driving.

Hoven pled guilty March 10 to charges of careless driving, and the court dismissed the additional charges of tampering with a motor vehicle and damage to property. Hoven was sentenced May 12, 2014 to 90 days in jail, stayed one year with unsupervised probation and conditions and ordered to pay a $200 fine, $3,000.06 restitution plus court costs and fees for a total of $3,290.60
