Colin Everson graduated Cook County High School (CCHS) last spring with every intention of enrolling at Minnesota Morris to go to school and to play basketball.

But somewhere along the line the Morris Cougars football coach found out that Everson was more than just a great basketball player, that he was also an All-Conference football player for CCHS, and the coach invited him to join the team.

“I decided to try both sports this year” said Everson, who is listed as a linebacker on the roster but plays defensive end and on special teams for Morris.

“It’s going pretty well. We’re 2-5 this year. We just lost a game last weekend in overtime. That was tough. The game is faster in college. It was a little difficult to adjust to at first. Each offense has a lot of schemes. So do the defenses. We meet every morning at 7 a.m. Each position meets separately and we go over our duties and assignments. Then we have practice in the afternoon,” Everson said.

With three football games left Everson will miss some basketball practice. But once the football season ends Everson will take to the hardwood where he is expected to play guard at the wing, or off-guard.

As Viking fans watched the previous three seasons, Everson has an exceptional ability to take his man off the dribble and explode by him to the basket. It’s that same speed the Morris football coaches are using to have Everson rush the quarterback.

At 6 feet tall and 190 pounds, he has to be one of the smallest defensive ends in college football. But as Viking fans can attest, Everson is a tremendous hitter, smart and a high-energy player.

An honor student throughout high school, Everson said college is definitely harder than high school, adding, “I’m on a pretty tight schedule, but it’s all doable. I will assess everything after basketball. I may not be able to play two sports throughout college, but at least it’s worth a try.”

Colin is a 2013 graduate of CCHS and is the son of Mitch and Cindy Everson of Grand Marais.
