Hard work pays off, and for two sisters who have spent hours and hours practicing log rolling, their dedication and perseverance has earned them bronze medals at the indoor log rolling national championships held in Hudson, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 10.
Paige and Taylor were the only rollers to attend nationals for the Northshore Rollers, but they represented their team well.
Rolling in the U10 class, Paige, age 10, rolled for “about 21 minutes against the girl who won,” said her mother, Andrea.
Each girl battled to a draw on logs as they “timed out,” then went to the next smallest log where they again timed out.
“They got all the way to the 4-log before they had falls,” said Andrea. The winner is determined by who wins 3 of 5 falls.
Paige ended up third in her division and dedicated her medal to a cousin who is battling cancer, said Andrea.
Taylor, age 6, rolled in the co-ed 7 and under class. She competed against several boys and ended up in third place. Still fairly new to the sport, Taylor is showing a lot of promise and is working hard to catch up to her big sister.
Paige took fourth in the speed birling with a score of 31. In birling, the goal is to see how many times you can make the log complete a full circle in 30 seconds. Taylor ended up 12th in speed birling.
North Shore log rolling coach Jenny Atkinson traveled from Stillwater to cheer on her young protégés. An eight-time log rolling world champion, Atkinson trains the kids when she is at her summer home on Clearwater Lake.
After the meet Atkinson posted on the team’s website, “Congratulations to the Everson girls for amazing rolling at nationals. I was so proud of all of their matches in the tournament.”
Paige and Taylor are the daughters of Tony and Andrea Everson of Grand Marais.
