Ernest Joseph Boyes

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest Joseph Boyes, resident of Grand Portage for 13 years. Ernest passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Thunder Bay, Ontario at 9:55 a.m. April 26, 2018 with Marcie McIntire, the love of his life, at his side. He fought hard to survive a serious illness during the last two years.

Ernest was born in Kashabowie, Ontario where he attended school. He spent a considerable amount of time hunting, fishing and trapping with his uncles Phillip, Norman and James Peters. During his youth and young adulthood, he devoted time to his grandmother Mary Peters Lacombe, who taught him Ojibwe ways. He lived in various parts of Canada, spending most of his time in Thunder Bay.

He lived his life as an adult working as a trapper, hunter, fisherman, guide, miner, geologist assistant and artist. He carved soapstone and worked with leather. His leather creations such as purses, bags, bracelets and hat bands were very popular because he made use of his own unique designs.

Ernest will be remembered for his pleasant, outgoing personality, hilarious jokes and his infectious laughter. His wonderful personality warmed the heart of many people he met. Ernest learned many things through quiet listening and as the years went by, he became a great supporter of women’s rights.

He is survived by his lifelong partner, Marcie McIntire, a large extended family and dear friends from all over the world.

A memorial service for Ernest will be held at 11 a.m. May 26 at the Grand Portage Community Center, Grand Portage, Minnesota. Everyone whose life was touched by Ernest is invited to attend. Food donations are welcome.
