The Gun Flint Tavern in downtown Grand Marais has a knack for finding somewhat-unknown but very talented young artists. One such artist will be appearing at the Tavern on Friday and Saturday, January 14 – 15. Erik Brandt of the Urban Hillbilly Quartet will be performing from 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. You’ll want to catch this performance of Americana- Roots-Rock Music.
Brandt has played to acclaim at a laundry list of venues from the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis to The Hideout in Chicago and from The Iota in Washington, D.C. to The Ritz in Missoula, Montana. He won the award for “Best Bluegrass Album” in 1999 and has been nominated for “Best Americana Band” three times and “Best Americana Roots” in 2006.
Awards aside, Brandt is just a great listen. His latest CD Sometimes was recorded in Hungary and it is a toe-tapping, cheerful recording. This reporter especially enjoyed the sweet love letter of Hanna Marie and the folksy Get Into the Boat.
To hear some of Brandt’s work, visit his website at www.ErikBrandt.com and click listen. There you will hear an eclectic mix of offerings—thoughtful original works and interesting covers such as Woody Guthrie’s classic This Train and Buck Owens’ Truck Drivin’ Man.
The show at Gun Flint Tavern is one not to miss. In Brandt’s own words from his delightful Ain’t Broke—Let’s go out and paint the town!
