Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota to hold an open house at Sawtoooth Mountain Clinic

The Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) will have an open house on April 17 at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic from noon to 7 p.m.

The open house will be in the lower conference room.

EFMN Regional Coordinator Lisa Peterson will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.

“This will be a great opportunity for individuals with epilepsy, family members, friends, or professionals in the community to gather resources and connect with others,” said Peterson.

Peterson is no stranger to Cook County. She has brought SEIZURE SMART SCHOOLS programs to several Cook County Schools.

Peterson, who serves 11 northeastern Minnesota counties, works closely with individuals and families impacted by epilepsy. During the day she will share her personal journey with epilepsy.

“After having seizures for 21 years, I had brain surgery in 2002 that cured my seizures,” Peterson said.

“I started my teaching career in 2003, and I met foster grandma Lyla in 2008 while teaching kindergarten in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. She shared about the loss of her 35-yearold son, Keith, to a seizure in 2004. Lyla is the reason that I picked up the phone and called the EFMN in 2008 to learn about how I could get involved as a volunteer.

“After five years of volunteering with the EFMN, I joined the staff in January of 2014 as a regional coordinator. I am passionate about helping others impacted by epilepsy discover that they are not alone in their journey.

“My goal is to increase awareness and understanding of epilepsy, and the upcoming open house will be a great way to become more visible in the community,” said Peterson.
