More than 1,000 kids in Minnesota participate annually in the Envirothon competition, which makes the tiny Cook County High School Envirothon teams fifth place at state a big deal.
Envirothon was held on May 16 at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
The 2022 State Envirothon competition presented a scenario for teams to tackle. Each team had to figure out ways to reduce waste at a small outdoor musical festival while maintaining the four-day festival as a sustainable success. Another goal was to show event sponsors and attendees that waste is preventable and waste can be a resource.
Further, the instructions stated, “To accomplish your task, you will need to learn about solid waste management and how to reduce, reuse, recycle, compost, and use waste-to-energy to keep waste out of landfills and how we can all use waste as a resource.”
The kids from Cook County put on their collective thinking caps, used their creativity, and came away with some hardware. It was an excellent showing for Cook County and for Northeastern Minnesota.
Envirothon team members from L-R: Wren Ferry, Lylla Christiansen, Genevieve Silence, Kalina Dimitrova, Cece Chmelic and Anna Hay.
