Staff report

The Cook County Envirothon team traveled 7.5 hours across border country to the state Envirothon competition at Lake Bronson State Park.

Envirothon Coach April Wahlstrom said, “We competed against 25 schools and Cook County finished in 10th place! Our kids represented us well.”

The winner of the meet was St. John’s Prep.

“We finished ahead of some large schools like Sartell and Central,” said Coach Wahlstrom. “Quite impressive especially for our small population.”

Each year Envirothon teams are given a scenario to handle. This year Envirothon teams were asked to develop a plan of attack to respond to the introduction of an aquatic invasive plant, Hydrilla verticillata, which is also known by the common names of Hydrilla, Florida elodea, water thyme, and Indian star-vine.

Wahlstrom said, “The kids have worked hard all spring and their work paid off.”
