Former Cook County High School Principal John Engelking was selected as the 2022 Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) Region 7 Administrator of Excellence award. John has been the Proctor public school’s superintendent for the last 12 years.
Engelking officially retired on September 14, 2021 but has stayed at Procter as an interim superintendent while school board has sought to find his replacement. He will leave office on June 30.
Although he has retired as a superintendent, John will lead a multi-district collaboration with St. Louis County as the Check & Connect Coordinator to provide support for at-risk students to stay on track to graduate.
Quoted in the Proctor Journal, Engelking said, “It’s nice to receive recognition from my peers across our region,” Engelking said. “But individual awards never happen without a great team. I am grateful for the privilege to lead our District and play a part in the success that everyone in our District has helped create.”
More from the Proctor Journal.
Established in 1985, the award goes to an administrator who exhibits a willingness to take a risk, possesses strong communication skills, is a progressive change agent, and has high expectations for themselves and others.
“The annual award is made to administrators in nine regions throughout the state. Each recipient is an active member of MASA. Following nominations, MASA members in each region determine the award winner.
“This is always very heartfelt,” Mia Urick, MASA director of professional learning said. “And that’s the beauty of this award. These people really know the people they nominate. It’s like naming one of ourselves.”
