The Cook County Vikings started a new quarterback, Joe Borud, and a new center, Brandon Curtis, for the game against the East Central Eagles last Friday night, September 13, 2013, but the results were pretty much the same as the week before, with the Vikings coming up short, losing 20-0.

But like last week, the Vikings moved the ball up and down the field all night long but couldn’t get it into the end zone due to turnovers. All in all, the Vikings turned the ball over six times in the first half.

Still, there were bright spots. Joe Borud started for the injured Leo Johnson and did a good job, especially throwing the ball. Midway through the third quarter Borud hit Owen Anderson with a beautiful throw that went for a 51-yard gain. Anderson caught the ball on a dead run, first looking left then right, hauling the ball in over his shoulder while being tackled.

“Owen is quickly showing that he is a leader on the field. His consistent play on both offense and defense has been fantastic. I really like the way Owen is playing on both sides of the ball, tough, scrappy, and with a lot of heart,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr.

“But, we won’t beat anyone with the amount of time we are turning the ball over. It has been and will continue to be a focus of emphasis at practice. We must take care of the football,” said Coach Dorr.

The injury bug has also troubled the Vikings. Senior captain Thomas Anderson is out for the year with an injury to his shoulder and Parker Slanga and Rory Bakke are also hurt and out for the year. In the last two games the Vikings have also suffered more injuries.

“Devynn (Deschampe) sustained a pretty severe concussion, so only time will tell. Richie Furlong has a sore knee so we expect him back this week, but we’re not sure. Leo Johnson hurt his shoulder and we will bring him back slowly.

“Each week it seems we have guys playing in brand new spots and it is really tough to be consistent when you are moving guys around. Hopefully we will be able to settle into some spots this week and go from there,” Dorr said.

For the game Joe Borud was 7-12 passing for 136 yards and he rushed for 13 yards. Jamie Wick caught three balls for 58 yards while Anderson caught three passes for 73 yards. Jacob Schroeder rushed for 72 yards on 12 carries and caught one ball for 5 yards. Freshman running back Jack Viren picked up 11 yards on two carries and Jack Wieben rushed for 16 yards on 9 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, Schroeder led the team with 13 tackles and Wieben was right behind with 12 tackles. Frankie Miller was also outstanding on defense with 10 tackles. Borud ended his night with 6 tackles, Brandon Curtis and Seth Warren had 5 tackles each while Owen Anderson had 4 tackles and Devyn Deschampe, Colton Thompson and Andrew Lashinski each had three tackles. Noah Warren and Breyer McQuatters had two tackles and John Pearson had one tackle.

“If we don’t turn the ball over, this season looks much different. We must, must learn how to take care of the ball. Our guys have to learn to not give in when they are down. Life is full of obstacles, but we must push on. We need to find the courage within us all,” said Dorr.
