Another busy summer has come and gone. This is always such a sad time for me as all our summer friends return to their winter destinations. Businesses close for the quiet season and I am reminded of the long winter ahead.
Recently I started to read for the second time a book titled On The Way To The Farm, memoirs written by my uncle Virgil Dahlstrom who loved to visit the North Shore and eat donuts. Of course we all know we are famous for the World’s Best Donuts.
While reading the memories of my father’s side of the family, I was fascinated with a story about my uncles Virg and Snookie who tried to start a donut stand (similar to a lemonade stand) on Jefferson Highway (probably a dirt road back then) but most of their profits went into their bellies. Needless to say, they went back to their mother (my grandmother) and asked for more of her yummy donuts to sell at their donut stand.
These memories of my uncles and their donut stand reminds me of growing up.
The World’s Best Donuts started out in a very small, and I mean small, storefront in what is now the Joynes Department Store parking lot. I can remember going there with my mom and buying donuts. Progress is amazing. And it has also been amazing to share the World’s Best Donuts shop and how it has progressed through the years with my kids. It always amazes them to learn about what things were like when I was young.
My point to this little story is to share the memories of your childhood and family stories with your children. They will cherish them forever.
