At some time in each month, one in 10 Cook County residents struggles to put food on their table. Most are working people, people down on their luck, or individuals who suffer from some form of disability who can’t make ends meet. To help fill those bare cupboards, Empty Bowls was brought to Cook County in 2006.

This year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held Thursday, November 10 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais; The event highlights the pervasiveness of hunger in Cook County while actively working to solve this community problem.

To help with this effort, approximately 75 volunteers are needed on the day of the event to assist with setting up, serving, and various other tasks, said Pat Campanaro. If interested in volunteering, please contact Pat at 651-336-2964 or pcampanaro@gmail.com.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, come and eat. Lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and cost $5.

Empty Bowls 2016 features a simple soup dinner with soup and bread provided by local restaurants and a beautiful array of handcrafted bowls made at the Grand Marais Art Colony Make-A-Bowls sessions by community members and potters. This year only, the event also features wooden bowls made by North House Folk School intern Sam Gathje. A silent auction—made possible through the generous donations of local businesses—offers a vast selection of gift certificates perfect for holiday, wedding, or birthday gifts. The bake sale provides sweet treats to enjoy at the event or to take home or to the office.

Proceeds from Empty Bowls battle hunger in Cook County by funding community hunger programs. Funds from last year’s Empty Bowls event were distributed to the Cook County Foundation WE Connect, Cook County Youth Agency, Cook County Public Health and Human Services, local schools, Snack Packs, Cook County Council on Aging, SNAP, and Cooperation Station Day Care to help nourish those in need.
