A number of Cook and Lake county community members have participated in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course, working together on a 20-hour FEMA curriculum, learning how citizens can be prepared for hazards and how to deal with disasters. One CERT member, Deb Ahlbeck, lost her husband, Richie Ahlbeck, to cancer recently, and her emergency services colleagues in Lake County are sponsoring a fundraiser to help the family with multiple medical bills and expenses.

Richie Ahlbeck was also a member of the emergency services community.

The benefit will be held at the Finland Community Center from noon to 3 p.m. on November 2.

Anyone who would like to donate an item for the silent auction is encouraged to contact BJ Kohlstadt at BJ.Kohlstedt@ co.lake.mn.us or (218) 226-444 or Cook County Emergency Management Director Jim Wiinanen at (218) 387-3059. An account has also been set up to accept donations for the family at the North Shore Federal Credit Union.
